Nowadays few restaurants serve "Dutch cuisine". In time we are planning to give you some recipes. Now we just mention 5 typical Dutch ways to fill your stomach. For more details follow this link
For the time beïng the winners are:
1. Erwtensoep. If a true Dutchman asks you if you would like to have "erwtensoep" (pronounced Airtensoup) then you know you've got the substitute product. The real stuff is called Snert (Snairt). If you have a dictionary it could be translated as "pea soup". To get the right idea: pea soup is to snert like silversand to concrete. These are familiar substances, but the effect to the body is totally different. Nelleke makes one of the finest "Snerts" of the Netherlands.
2. Zure bom (pronounced Zurah Bom) is a pickel, but bigger. You can buy it at "real Dutch fish carts". Translated we're talking here about Sour Bomb. You're warned!
3. At the same cart you can buy "zoute haring" (pronounced Zowtha Hahring). It's a raw herring. Beginners eat it on a bun, Hollanders in sliced parts with a slice of Zure bom. Real Dutch men (and women) simply take it by the tail, put some onions on it and let it slide down their throat. You are allowed to bite just before the tail enters your mouth. Actually, Rob recommends it!
4. Boerenkool met rookworst (pronounced Boorncoal met roakworst) is one of the major Dutch Stews: borecole (kale), with mashed patatoes and gravy, served with "smoked sausage", except it's also boiled. The latter only tastes good when it's a butcher's rookworst. The rookworst is brought to the right flavour with mustard. If you're really hungry you can add bacon. Other famous Dutch stews are "Zuurkool", "Hachee" and "Hutspot".
5. Poffertjes (pronounced Poffurtjahs). Pancakes baked on a special plate, with the size of a silver dollar. Hollow inside, eaten with much powdered sugar and butter. Eat them hot! They have no nutritious value other than that they make you fat, but the tast is excellent! |
